Announcement: Time to practice your Hungarian? Here’s a podcast with me about learning (languages), cultures, my complicated youth and other things.
By now, everyone has probably decided what they believe about Covid. Since a few years have passed and tempers have calmed, it may be an appropriate time to reflect on what actually happened. As well as on the so-called conspiracy theories about the virus. This way we could kill two birds with one stone. 1. We may put an event that terrified the planet for two years into better perspective. 2. We may glimpse into the constructs of reality we build in our minds. Opening the door to new possibilities can help dismantle our misconceptions about the corona (crown) virus.
According to the most hardline bundle of theories the virus was deliberately unleashed on us in order to a) exterminate us, b) make us buy vaccines, c) test new ways of controlling the masses, d) act out the perpetrators’ evil nature, e) etc.
Some questions immediately arise. One is the missing subject of the above sentences. The ‘evil background power that controls the world’ needs to be defined more specifically. Even if one exists, it can only act through specific people and institutions. Whom are we accusing? The CIA? The Chinese government? Pfizer? The Anunnaki?

Another thing to be determined is the purpose of the alleged actor. Whoever they were, what could they have been trying to achieve? Of the above versions a) and d) seem rather weak in this respect. The extermination of the population could only be seen as positive by a radical conservationist who is fed up with our rampaging around the planet. Such a person wouldn’t have the necessary means at their disposal, however. It’s worth taking a realistic look at who has benefited from the chaos caused by the virus: the lockdowns, the vaccinations, the huge orders of respirators, the fear of the masses, their isolation, their becoming even more dependent on the internet, the absolute power of politicians (due to emergency measures), etc. Of course, this does not mean that those persons or institutions caused the pandemic, they may have simply taken advantage of the situation as it unfolded. Nevertheless, such an inquiry does highlight possible perpetrators.
The first point to determine is whether the virus was of natural or artificial origin.

I think it’s fairly obvious to anyone who has been following the news that governments’ pronouncements about the virus, the epidemic, and the measures to be taken were, by and large, gobbledygook. But the fact that they were inept, that they kept lying, that they took advantage of the situation for personal and political gain doesn’t mean that they caused the disease. They were just doing their usual thing with a new element. But where did that come from?
The virus emerged in the city of Wuhan where China’s first level 4 (highest security) biolab, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, is located. A responsible approach would have required the authorities to close the institute immediately and investigate whether it could have been involved in the outbreak. If a circus comes to town and the next day a stray elephant appears on the street, what kind of policeman wouldn’t ask the circus manager about his elephants?

Instead, there was an unprecedented attack on anyone who dared to ask whether the virus might be linked to the institute. Moreover, the Americans and the Chinese, who were on spectacularly bad terms at the time, immediately fell into the same camp. “The virus COULD NOT have come from the institute!!!”, screamed every official outlet. “Anyone who thinks such a thing is unscientific, a conspiracy theorist, and will kill your grandmother!”
OK, you could say, the Chinese were paranoid, stuck in a defensive position. It’s logical that if someone is suspected of causing a pandemic, they will deny it in outrage. They could also have been guilty of something else, wanting to avoid being investigated. Who knows what they were messing with in those torture chambers? But why was the American medical establishment joining them? If only out of spite for the enemy, they should have been accusing the Chinese bio-lab, instead of vehemently defending it.
This is quite suspicious, yet still speculation. But more concrete things have come to light. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, chaired by Dr Fauci, funded a bat coronavirus project jointly conducted by the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the US EcoHealth Alliance. Obviously, they ferociously deny that their outcome was producing ‘gain-of-function’ viruses. Who wouldn’t? The very existence of this connection is astonishing, though. The Wuhan institute did indeed tamper with bat coronaviruses using money provided by the organization of Fauci. And this person is the one making official statements about the origin of the virus! How come Mengele wasn’t the main medical expert at the Nuremberg trials?

What was also strange is that the official theory of the virus’ origin was immediately present. The virus came from bat meat sold in the Wuhan market, period. An entirely new pathogen appears, causing unprecedented chaos on the whole planet and its past life is immediately obvious? No scrutiny, no scientific investigation, no alternatives? The unusual furin cleavage site of the virus that allows it to attack human cells, that other coronaviruses lack, needs no explanation, is perfectly normal? Compounding the issue is the very strange behavior of the virus. This is a subjective feeling, but anyone who has been through it has felt that this pathogen is qualitatively different from any they have encountered before.
We cannot go into all the details on these pages. Yet on the whole it seems quite probable that this strange formation is man-made, and most likely came from the ominous Wuhan institution. Of course, we cannot be sure, but I would give it an at least 80% chance.
Oops. So who was it then, Pfizer, MI6 or the Anunnaki? Or were they all in cahoots? Wait a minute. The fact that it’s quite likely that people fabricated the beast doesn’t mean that it was deliberately released into our necks.

Unfortunately, biological warfare is not new. This is how colonialists wiped out most of the original population of the Americas. The manufacture of super pathogens is hard to justify for any other reason, at least with a straight face. Where did the virus appear the earliest? In China, Italy and Iran. Two of those countries are enemies of the US, the war-superpower. In Iran the disease has actually wreaked quite a havoc among the aged political leaders. Could the alleged perpetrators think that distance would protect them? Viruses and human stupidity know no boundaries. And in October 2019, two months before the outbreak, Wuhan hosted the World Military Games, where soldiers from 109 countries competed. If an army or an agency wanted to bring the virus into China, this was a pretty good opportunity. In that case the Institute of Virology would have offered a good cover story. Let the wise guys argue whether it came from a bat cave or the Institute, haha.

With all that, this is quite speculative. If you ask me, I’d give intentional dissemination at most a 50% chance. There are too many uncertainties, high risks and no clear benefits. Some mad scientist could be willing to attempt such a world-shaking experiment, but this stunt would have required at least a multi-billion dollar agency with more than one or two people in the know. When the other agencies (even within their own country) are surely watching the competition with a wary eye.
But let us continue the thought experiment. Suppose someone did unleash this blessing on us on purpose. Although the vaccine companies profited greatly from it, it still doesn’t follow that they were the originators. It could have been a pension provider. The odd thing for the pharmaceutical companies would have been not to jump on the case once such an opportunity presented itself.
But suppose it’s true. Let’s say that some vaccine company deliberately fabricated the virus to make a lot of money from vaccination. Paolo Bacigalupi’s sci-fi The Windup Girl is about a future where a few food companies control the world through the food crop diseases they manufacture. The mechanism described in this exciting novel is far from fictional. We know that tobacco companies have been lying for decades about addiction and adverse effects. The companies advertising opioid drugs have also knowingly sent millions to their graves without a blink. And the convicted anti-hero billionaire of the following documentary is a pitiful nobody compared to Big Pharma.
While moral issues in the management of many giant companies are unlikely, the chances of them manufacturing the virus are still quite low. The gap between ‘I’m not against’ and ‘I’m doing it’ is a wide one, both in terms of motivation and knowledge. In addition, the risks are too high. They might be discovered. Also, pharmacists could be more aware of the consequences of a pandemic. They have grandmothers, too. And even if they did make the virus, it still doesn’t mean the vaccines are harmful. And even if that’s true, if there are hushed-up negative effects of the vaccines, it still doesn’t follow that masses will die from it.
What really happened? Based on the information we have, the truth could be at any level, with a more and more diminishing chance for the more outlandish theories. Quick conclusions, such as ‘drug companies made a killing, so they must have made the virus’ or ‘the evil background powers wanted to wipe out humanity with vaccines’ are too premature. Why couldn’t the virus have mutated on its own? Mutating is viruses’ hobby. Why couldn’t it have been released by human error? Humans make mistakes all the time, the depths of the oceans are hiding not one lost nuclear bomb. Why wouldn’t the pharmaceutical companies have seized the opportunity? Capitalism is based on opportunistic behavior. And so on.
There is also a theory that the omicron variety is a vaccine in itself. A mild version that displaced the earlier ones was quickly assembled, thus pulling out the poison fang of the epidemic. Or it could have been providence. Who would have thought four years ago that there would be lineups at the airport check-in counters again? Most of us were spared. And since it happened, we can use this event for learning. Not just about our way of life, about the crazy risks our society takes, but also about our thinking.
